Greener Valley Stables
197 Broomfield Road
Grafton ON K0K 2G0
Most horses enter into training during the beginning of the season. Trainers barns are full of noises and sounds and often are a high paced, excitable environment. We've all seen bucking and kicking in a stall due to the passing of other horses in the hallways. A horse on stall rest with plenty of pent up energy usually acts out as others are going by. That bucking and kicking may be hindering the healing of wounds, leg troubles, etc. It's very hard to keep stitches in a horse that does acrobatics daily in the stall. That horse in the training barn is used to getting out every day and having exercise and routine. Once that is taken away due to an injury or surgery, the horse has to develop a new routine of stall rest or limited activity. This isn't always possible when they remain in the same environment. They are used to acting in a certain manner and now have to change. By changing the horse to a different environment, he now relearns what is expected. In some cases, they become quieter and more relaxed, because that is what they learn. Healing of bones and tissues can be faster if there aren't the outside stresses involved in the horses behaviour.
Trainers can take advantage of this unique service as a backup to their existing schedules. The valuable stall space they have available remains for horses in training on a daily basis. Lay ups return when ready to begin conditioning again, which makes it much easier for the trainer to keep within their important tasks.
Greener Valley Stables is a small stable of only ten stalls, and wide hallways mean other horses walking by are not close to the front of others who remain on stall rest. Paddocks are out of sight from the barn, so the sounds of running and playing don't carry into the barn and excite behaviour. We have the time to treat each horse as an individual case when it comes time to feeding, hand walking or following up with your veterinarian.
